So, I don’t think the US debut is for another couple of weeks, but does anyone actually wait for that?

Anyway, “The Eleventh Hour” has brought us Matt Smith as the new Doctor and I can easily say I’m more impressed with his first performance than with Eccleston’s or Tennant’s. He was hilarious, endearing, and had just the right amount of crazy (i.e., shitloads).

Some consider it unfair to compare the different Doctors to each other and claim that each is unique. This is true, but what the hell else are you going to compare them to? Smith seems to capture the best aspects of the 9th and 10th Doctor, magnifying Eccelston’s cookiness with Tennant’s wit, but adding so much more. I can’t remember the last time I laughed so much with an episode of Doctor Who (I’m not sure if I even have before). Still, despite the constant amusement, there’s still good contrast with scenes that are more tense, eerie, and scary.

Moffat’s writing was also great and structured much better than Davies’ stories, which isn’t much of a surprise. I’m still a bit skeptical as to whether Moffat will be able to pull off the epic season finales like Davies always did, but I’m certainly excited to find out.

It’s a bold thing to say at such an early point, but it’s the truth: based on his first performance and the amount of room he has to develop, Matt Smith is looking to be my favorite Doctor yet.
